Puppy And Kitten Care

We are excited that you have welcomed a new puppy or kitten into your home. When you bring your newest furry family member to us you can expect the following:

Physical exam: Your puppy’s or kitten’s lifetime of wellness starts with its first comprehensive physical exam. At your puppy’s or kitten’s first visit you will have the opportunity to ask questions you may have about your pet’s health including physical changes you may notice, as well as any behavioral questions or concerns. We understand that your puppy or kitten is a valuable member of your family and we welcome any opportunity to advise you during this exciting time.

Overview of pet care: Our team is dedicated to helping you determine how much food your puppy or kitten needs, what type of food they should eat, and when you should be feeding your pet. We can also provide you with information regarding how to house-train your new pet and how to handle behavior training.

Vaccinations: Please see our vaccine section for more information on which vaccines your pet will require.

Spaying and neutering advice: We will discuss with you the reasons why we recommend spaying and neutering.

Diagnostic testing: We recommend that puppies are tested for heartworm at 6 months of age if not done previously and that kittens are tested for Feline Leukemia and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) at their first visit if not done previously. Fecal testing helps identify parasites such as roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, tapeworms, and giardia. A large percentage of pets are born with parasites (transferred from the parents). Therefore, we recommend deworming every puppy or kitten.

Microchipping: This is an implant that is a one-time expense and is about as small as a grain of rice. If your pet gets lost, they can be found thanks to this registered microchip. We recommend doing this at the time of spaying and neutering, but it can be done at any time.

Nail Trim Demonstration: If at the time of your puppy or kitten visit, his/her nails are the appropriate length, a team member will demonstrate how to safely restrain and clip your wiggly companions nails. Our goal is to ensure you feel comfortable doing the same procedure at home. Boost your puppy’s or kitten’s confidence with treats and positive reinforcement while touching their feet.

New Puppy/Kitten Bag: By the end of your first consultation we’ve probably discussed diet, dental health and training. Our bag includes treat samples, a measuring cup, and information about preventive care. The first puppy or kitten vet visit can be overwhelming but we are always happy to review what was discussed or address any questions you may have forgotten to ask at the time. Just call the hospital or send us an email.
