A full physical exam and pre-anesthetic blood work, including a major abdominal organ screen and complete blood count, are performed prior to the procedure when we are using general anesthesia.

For monitoring, not only do we use advanced equipment, but more importantly we assign a trained technician to continuously evaluate the pet’s heart rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen levels, breathing rate, and temperature closely. We are now increasingly using “balanced anesthesia”, which incorporates local nerve blocks and more aggressive pain management. This dramatically reduces the amount of anesthesia necessary and is significantly safer.

All patients undergoing anesthesia receive an intravenous catheter. This is to allow them to be maintained on fluid therapy to give maximum support to abdominal organs and maintain their blood pressure throughout the anesthetic procedure. Pain medications are administered before, during and after the procedures are completed to ensure a restful recuperation at home. We always schedule a follow-up appointment with you to ensure your pet is healing as expected

Most of our surgical and dental patients will go home the same day. If we feel overnight monitoring is necessary for the more complicated procedures we transfer the pet to Blue Pearl Veterinary Partners in Brooklyn.
